It lifts up to help him out if the chair. He especially likes the adjustable neck support. Our salesperson was super helpful and the store had a wheelchair available so he didn't have to walk to the back of the store. Very happy with our purchase. One suggestion would be if it had a lock or off button for the controls as his hand always bumps the buttons when he goes to stand. #sweepstakes
