DO create a budget and STICK TO IT! No matter how much you fall in love with a design, it won’t be a success if you use up all your funds half way through.
DO buy the big items first. It is much easier to match a rug to a sofa you love than the other way around. Getting the big items in place will also give you a better idea of how the room will be set up and where there are areas that need filled.
DO add your own lighting. Recessed lighting rarely adds to the ambiance of a room. Table lamps and floor lamps give a much nicer light and can add a style all their own.
DO incorporate your own style. Don’t be afraid to add items with some personality. Filling the entire room with wild patterns and colors could be too much, but a little is what makes a room your own.
DO include pattern and texture. They are what makes a design really come together.
DON’T underestimate the size area rug you need. An area rug is one of the easiest ways to group together an area of furniture. When creating your conversational space, the area rug in your room should sit just under the front legs of your furniture.
DON’T be blasé about color. You love red, and that’s great! But be absolutely sure that you love it enough to buy a red leather sectional. For some people that’s perfect, for others it can be a bit too much color when you get it into your home.
DON’T match your textiles exactly to your furniture. Curtains and others textiles should suggest the same colors, patterns or overall feel but not match exactly.
