5 Factors to Think About Before Furnishing Your Dining Room
How many people will you be accommodating?
Think about the size of your family. Is it large or small? Are you the type of person who enjoys large get-togethers with friends? These questions will help you choose the right table size and number of chairs.
How will the space be used?
Will your dining room be used for everyday eating or just formal events? How multi-functional does the space need to be? Will the table size need to adjust up and down for different occasions? Consider a table with leaves and where you may need to place extra chairs when not in use.
What is your food serving preference?
Do you prefer buffet-style dining or do you host a lot of sit-down dinner parties? For buffet-style, you may want to purchase various pieces to use as serving stations, like hutches, credenzas or bars.
What's your hosting style?
Do you prefer casual gatherings to formal ones? Do you use your everyday dishes or need a china cabinet to store formal dishware? You may also want to ask yourself if you want the décor of your dining room to reflect your hosting style. If you prefer formal dinners, consider dark woods, classic designs, matching sets and dramatic lighting such as chandeliers. If you're more of the casual type, consider contemporary pieces, like chairs with slipcovers, mixed or repurposed pieces and a bolder color palette with soft lighting, like sconces.
What items need to be stored in the room?
Is the dining room where you keep many of your finer dishes? Perhaps it's a place to store your wine collection or bar supplies. Think through everything you'll want to place in the room and be sure to buy a dining table that allows enough space for your other pieces, especially if you have plans to add more furniture in the future.
